Anna Chaplaincy grows with commissioning on the Isle of Wight

Bringing continued growth of Anna Chaplaincy, the diocese commissioned four new Anna Chaplains at the end of July at Newport Minster, enabling spiritual support to the elderly community within the parishes of Christ Church, Sandown and St John the Baptist, Niton on the island.

The Revd Vickie Morgan led the service with a sermon delivered by the Revd Dr Coleen Jackson. Readings were given by Philip Poulter, diocesan secretary and Jane Wilshaw, Anna Chaplain coordinator for the island.

Each had discerned a heart for the ministry with their clergy and will now go out into their communities. If unable to join worship on a Sunday due to mobility or other restrictions, Anna Chaplains are vital to enable those advanced in years to express their faith within their own home setting. Chaplains may also find themselves alongside those of little or no faith, enabling them to explore faith in later life perhaps for the first time.

The new Chaplains came from a variety of backgrounds including social work and healthcare among the elderly in their communities. Being commissioned as an Anna Chaplain recognises the ministry and enables support from the diocese as well as their own parish.
