We were delighted to celebrate Frances Attwood’s commissioning recently on the south coast. Here’s her story, and some photos from the day:
I have always loved older people since my childhood, enjoying time with my grandmothers, both of whom lived in the same road as us. They had time to talk, and I enjoyed hearing about their lives. When I became a Christian, aged 18, I was very struck by the difference in outlook and hope that shone out from older believers, despite physical struggles and limitations. Many years later, working as a music therapist with people living with dementia and their family carers, I felt such a concern for these families in their isolation. So, when Covid brought my music groups to an unwonted halt, I began to consider what more churches could do to support them.
I decided to study for a masters in applied theology, specialising in chaplaincy, and appreciated the opportunity to explore in depth churches’ ministry to families living with dementia. Meanwhile I volunteered at Immanuel Church, Southbourne, which offers a whole week’s programme of dementia-friendly activities. ‘Memory Lane’ is a reminiscence session which stimulates and provides an opportunity for relaxed social interaction and laughter. When I completed my course I became the leader.
Recently I have begun visiting a local care home. I requested the opportunity to see those who are confined to their rooms. It feels like full circle, listening to their stories and finding them so interesting. What a privilege to be able to spend time with these precious individuals, created in the image of God, and to be available as a conduit for the Holy Spirit!
Debbie says:
‘Congratulations, Frances! Anna Chaplaincy is all the richer for having you as part of the network. We look forward to seeing all that will develop in your ministry.’
